How to Choose a Good Gamertag for Gaming

Coming up with a Good Gamertag

Your gamertag is one of your most personal forms of expression on a game. Depending on what you're playing, it can create an impression on hundreds of people.

It's important to find an alter-ego that suits you: a well-placed allusion, (e.g. Frodo Fraggins or Das Bait), joke (e.g. ghettohamburgler), or menacing word (e.g. BeastMode) communicates your personality right of the bat.

If you're having trouble getting started, follow the steps below to help job your creative process.

Step 1: Decide What Genre of Games You Are Interested in

f you haven't done so already, consider what types of game you will be playing. This will allow you to imagine the type of impression you would like to create with your gamertag. Consider if you are going to be playing one of the following:

FPS games
MMORPGs
Strategy games
RPGs
Sports
Brain games
Other

Step 2: Brainstorm Gamertags

Next, we are going to brainstorm words that would fit your gamertag. While you can search online for name generators, the are unlikely to give you the kind of name you want. A good name requires creativity, intellect, and nuance. Think about what tone you'd like to use—whether it be fun, powerful, scary, cute, or quirky—and use the following steps to help make up your name.

Don't worry about if the gamertag is already in use—leave that until step three. Instead, focus on finding one that suits you.

If you are going for a powerful name, consider incorporating one of the world's natural elements: earth, wind, water, or fire.

Alternatively, you can consider natural phenomenon, such as earthquakes, storms, etc. Playing a FPS game? Consider incorporating an allusion to your favorite gun, map, or outfit.
Playing an MMORPG? What about referencing your favorite weapon, animal, or dungeon?
A good name means something. Consider a favorite character from a retro game that others may recognize or lyrics from a favorite song.
Do you already have a nickname? Perhaps you can think of a play on words using your nickname.
If you don't have a nickname, think of two-word gamertags that start with the same letters as your real name. Sometimes self-imposed constraints such as this can help you be more creative.

Warning

Before you settle on your name, think about whether you eventually want to use it for other genres of games or media. For example, if you intend to one day make a YouTube channel or Twitter with the same tag, check those websites first to make sure that your name isn't a copy of someone else's name. If it is, you may get a lot of hate from certain people and wind up having to change your name after all. If it isn't, it is a good idea to create a user account reserving that name proactively in case you want to use it later.

Gamertags like ‘xXHardscopeXx’ and ‘EpicSlayer542’ look pretty unprofessional. Luckily there are alternatives that allow you to keep your name, without resorting to those tactics. Remember that there are a lot of ways in which you can combine your new name! Don’t be afraid to experiment; you shouldn’t be held back from making your desired gamertag just because some of the options are already in use.

A Few Tips to Keep in Mind

Don't go full caps. It will make your name look like you are shouting. Only change letters to numbers as your last resort. This will make it look a bit less professional, and so is only recommended if all the other options are already in use.

Pro Tip for PlayStation
If you are making a PlayStation username and are not 100 percent sure that you can stick with one name for an extended period of time, make a Japanese account. That's right, Japanese. Why? Japanese accounts allow you to change your username without having to make a new account! The only disadvantage: the menu is in Japanese. But if you know where to find everything, this shouldn't be a big problem.
Best of luck finding a new gamertag that fits your personality! If you have any suggestions I may have forgotten, please leave them in the comments.
